The Power of Narrative (Choice Topic 2)
I frequently find myself getting swept up in narratives. Whether it be shorter narratives of watching a movie or listening to an album or longer narratives like reading a book or watching a TV series, I frequently find myself swept up in the characters, scenery or imagery, and plot of these narratives. Eric Peterson and Kristin Langellier discuss in their essay in the journal "Communication as..." discuss how narrative is far more than simply a mundane thing but is instead one of the most important ways that people can get information across. It makes sense when one looks at the way Jesus of Nazareth taught using parables and the ways that these parables taught different things about the character of God as well as the way people who follow Him should act. Narrative and creativity have the potential in our culture to teach people unique things in that same way, things that can change the way people see the world, others, and their relation to others and the world. When I look at the impact narrative can have on not just people but culture as a whole I am inspired by the potential that creativity has to change the perspectives, thoughts, and ideologies of people.
