The World/Our Role



Sitting here pondering the state of our world. If you asked me to describe the world in less than 3 words I would describe it as chaotic, sinful and twisted. This is not to say that there is no good in the world. I believe that God is seen in everything around the world, but humans have gotten caught up in self gratification. We want to gratify our desires quickly and on our terms. This is why if you look at celebrities in our world, parties, drugs, alcohol, food, expensive houses, unique clothes, plastic surgery, extravagant cars, and sexual relations are all put on a pedestal. We indulge in the things of this world. Money is emphasized. In the eyes of our society, the more of things you have, the more successful you are. This is such a twisted view to have because it teaches  young children that having THINGS is rewarding. This couldn’t be the farthest from the truth. It is teaching our youth to be arrogant, power driven, money hungry individuals in our society.

How could we teach our youth that this is not what is most important in life? I think the answer to this is to teach our children the way of the trail. One should not look at their status as something to brag about, but living simply can teach children the necessity to live humbly. We are called to be obedient to Christ. Often times we desire so strongly to be obedient to Christ, yet the things of this world distract our flesh very heavily. This is when it is time to retreat to the trail. One should take a break from the distractions of this world and focus on the relationship that can occur between God and man. We should rely on God to be our refuge. When we rely on Him, we grow in our relationship with Him. When on the trail, all status disappears, transformation occurs, all need for money dissipates, our egos diminish.

This semester, I have found myself most Sunday afternoons feeling stuck. I don't want to use my mind and I don't want to move off my couch. Nothing seems to sink in past surface level and I would simply scroll through Facebook, not taking in any information but merely skimming. Landscapes of the Sacred #2

In Landscapes of the Sacred, Ch. 10 discusses the tension between place and placelessness is Christian Spirituality. It discusses the two approaches to sacred place: kataphatic and apophatic.  Kataphatic rejoices in discerning the presence of God in the “thisness” of various places [place] while a pophatic: skeptical of an image’s ability to contain the mystery of the Holy [placelessness]. In one specific section, The Christian Imagination and a Theology of Place, Lane discusses how God is here, but not only here. It All Begins With Praise - Phenomenology of Prayer

When talking about the elements of prayer, the author of The Phenomenology of Prayer claims that praise is where we need to start. Prayer is the "deepest decentering of the the self." Prayer should begin with adoration, acknowledging the power of the higher being. From the faith background in which I was raised, the idea of removing yourself from the center of the universe (humiliating yourself) and putting God at the center is how to live a spirit-filled life. Wholeheartedly yielding yourself to the Spirit is no easy feat, Galatians 5 explains that the desires of the flesh (personal projects) are against the desires of the Spirit (wholly other's projects). This ongoing struggle is the life of one who has faith in Jesus. The more time spent praising God in prayer, the more preoccupied one will become with God and submitting to his will, empowered by the Spirit, will then become our project.
