Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture #2
I have always been drawn to the idea of long-distance hikes above pilgrimages. Images and Pilgramage discusses the impacts of popularity, tourism, and major institutions on pilgrimages. I rarely gain meaningful experiences from tourist attractions, no matter how profound the history or beauty. I appreciate what has happened, but do not necessarily wish to visit it. The locations, teeming with camera-wielding tourists, lose their sense of authenticity. I do not feel as though I experience what makes the location sacred when I am surrounded by commotion. In the wilderness, however, one is able to experience the authenticity they crave. This more often provides for me the experience I desire; peace and nature leads to the sacred experience that many seek on pilgrimages.
