Landscapes of the Sacred #1: 4 Axioms
In Landscapes of the Sacred by Belden Lane the 4 axioms of a sacred place are:
1. A sacred place can be tread upon without being entered
2. A sacred place chooses
3. A place of the ordinary is made extraordinary by ritual
4. The impulse of the sacred place can both be local and universal/centripetal
I have seen this be evident in certain places in my life that I have found to be sacred. Places such as the Secret Beach have become these 4 axioms described by Lane. The Secret Beach is an ordinary neighborhood beach area. There is nothing particularly special about the place by first glance besides its beautiful sunsets. I have often found myself being drawn to this specific place this semester. It has become a place of refuge and revelation. Almost every time I've been to the Secret Beach has been during times of seeking refuge or guidance. I really felt this place choose me to come in and find refuge in its waves.
