Outside Reading #1

As I ponder what we've learned in class, on specific quote comes to mind. Thomas Kelly writes in his book, A Testament of Devotion, "For over the margins of life comes a whisper, a faint call, a premonition of richer living which we know we are passing by. Strained by the mad pace of our daily outer burdens, we are further strained by an inward uneasiness, because we have hints that there is a way of life vastly richer and deeper than all this hurried existence, a life of unhurried serenity and peace and power." This quote draws me back to the overarching themes of wilderness and solitude we have discussed in class. I am reminded of how it is nearly impossible to escape the "marketplace economy" in which we live unless one consciously removes body and mind from their current environment. But when we venture into wilderness and solitude, we are reminded of the life we were created to live - a life filled with "serenity, peace, and power."
