Outside Reading #2: Martin Buber - "I and Thou"
"Marriage can never be renewed except by that which is always the source of all true marriage: that two human beings reveal the You to one another. It is of this that the You that is I for neither of them builds a marriage." (95)
This specific quote has been something that I have been deeply reflecting upon. Even though this is specifically describing the relationship of marriage. I also see this resonating with other kinds of relationships such as friendships and family. The essence of this statement is touching upon the idea of kenosis where the self is emptied and the you is brought out in each other. This act is aligned with complete selflessness. The I become sacrificed in order that the You would be revealed. According to the Biblical perspective of marriage, it should be representative of two becoming one. The intertwining of two beings becomes a way for each to reveal the You in each other.
