Outside Reading #2
"Occasionally, he would exclaim over a view or regard with admiration some passing marvel of nature, but mostly to him hiking was a tiring, dirty, pointless slog between distantly spaced comfort zones" -Bill Bryson, A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail
Bill Bryson's humorous recounts of various misadventures on the trail reminded me of the young girl we discussed in class. Neva Warren, who went by the trail name "Chipmunk," seemed to only embark on the thru hike to accomplish the physical challenge and achieve the title of youngest AT thru hiker. The trail is not for all a profound sacred experience, and the obstacles experienced on it can either add to the journey or completely ruin it.
