Outside Reading

This semester Psalm 40 has been very comforting for me, especially verses 1-3, that say “I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. 2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.” When I read it I receive so much peace in how David is saying he waited patiently for the Lord when he was in the pit of destruction, the miry bog. I feel like this was a place I knew well at one time and I didn’t have much patience with God. I wanted other things to pull me out of it but here David is expecting no other relief from this place of destruction than from God, so he is waiting patiently for him. Then he says how when God did hear his cry he drew him from the pit and set his feet on a rock. I love the peace that comes with that. How God draws us up from pits of destruction and sets us upon the rock that is him, and on that rock our steps are secure no matter what may happen in our lives. Like David, I feel like a new song has been put in my mouth, a song of praise to God for his constant love and rule over our lives. This verse is always reminding me the place that God brought me out of, the rock I now stand on and the song of praise I now sing.
