Phenomenology of Prayer - Prayer and Economy
Prayer to us is often seen as an exchange. We pray to God so that we may receive certain gifts of blessings that we desire from him. This type of prayer is an economic prayer. But prayer shouldn't be economic. So then how do we pray that does not use God? Well first off God isn't economic, he created the world so how can he exist in the world? Jesus is a clear example of how we can interact with something that isn't of this world or even close to it. The idea of Kenosis or Self Emptying is the only way that this is even possible. Jesus because he became something less than God and became an earthly servant he could interact with us. Its in his interaction on the Cross that connects us to the divine. We now can interact and connect with the divine and prayer can access us to that.
Jesus always seems to be the key to the issues that come up in philosophy or religious studies or issues of this world. Most of the time when I read this book I realize how big of a deal it is to be a christian and what the cross really means in so many ways.
I would like to stop praying for economic gain. I want to see Jesus and the cross as an access point to the divine that is a way for me to be reminded so clearly of who I truly am. Prayer has been an amazing point for me recently to connect to the peace and grace that exists as a Christian and child of God. I do not want to see God as anything other than the creator, ruler, king, designer, etc. I want to see him as he truly is. I am thankful for Jesus and what he did on the cross and I hope to continue to learn what that cross really means.
