Student's Choice #3

My most meaningful volunteer experience was Great Falls Assisted Living. It was my first time interacting with elders in a long time given the fact that I have not seen my grandparents for over five years since I moved to the United States from my home country, Cameroon. It was a great opportunity to connect with people who are not in my circle.  I volunteer at the activity room to serve breakfast and play different activities with the elders. Some of them need more attention than others because of the sickness. They have told me stories about the wars they experience when they were in military, or heard about the World War 2 and Vietnam war on the radio, and how they were afraid of their loved ones’ lives. It gave me different perspectives of how their childhoods were so much different than mine.  Then, I started to know names through the care of Nursing assistants and families. During tough times like these, elders like to see young children because it reminds them how they were free and innocent at their age.
