The Phenomenology of Prayer: Kenosis and Incarnation
The Phenomenology of Prayer discusses prayer as kenosis. According to the text, the two integral aspects to praying effectively are practicing kenosis and incarnation. Kenosis is the practice of full emptying oneself during prayer. Incarnation is allowing prayer to infiltrate your bodily behavior and being as a whole. I am not overly religious in the first place but I do pray regularly. Prior to reading this, I sort of follow a script when praying: "thank you", "please help with this," "I trust you and I'll do better tomorrow." I always maintain full honesty and try not to be selfish. Kenotic prayer is tougher than it sounds; emptying yourself before a higher power leaves you feeling vulnerable. Upon reading about prayer, I do believe that it is extremely important to incorporate kenosis and incarnation into your prayer routine. Having the idea of prayer penetrate your actions and normal everyday behaviors will strengthen your relationship with God.
