Topic of Choosing: Daily Mass

Early this morning I went to Daily Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.  I typically don’t get up so early for Church on Wednesday, but was convinced by a couple of my friends. I was surprised getting up how alert I was at 7 am and even more surprised when I arrived and was welcomed by about 20 other of my friends who had also mustered the energy to go.  Early Daily Masses are largely attended by much older folk, and they were so excited to see so many young people in attendance.

What struck me most about Mass was the relevance of Father’s homily to our course.  He spoke about how people are either “mountain people” or “ocean people”--drawn to the beauty and wonder of one or the other.  He described the mystery behind the spiritual appeal of these landmarks and how they are true symbols and expressions of the beauty of Christ.  It also comes as no surprise, he explained, why Jesus would speak to crowds on a mountain, perhaps epitomizing the idea of the axis mundi.

Taking this course has better put things in perspective for me, including this homily.  I always wondered if the draw that I’ve had toward the water was some kind of arbitrary thing, but it dawned on me in this class that perhaps it’s a sign of something greater--a physical mark of the infinite power and wonder of God.
