Vodun Ritual

In parts of West Africa, the religion Vodun is practiced scarcely. However, this religion has a unique ritual in a natural setting. The ritual involves an attempt to make the individual into a vessel or medium. An individual is taken into a forest for three days without food or water. According to the Vodun, the Earth Spirit, Sakpata lays claim to the individual’s body during the ritual, overcoming the individual so that he or she becomes unconscious. The individual is then brought back to consciousness after three days. This ritual exemplifies the connection between nature and the divine, the individual and the Earth spirit become one in this unique Vodun ritual.
